Buy ANY new release on PS3/Xbox 360 for less than Wholesale!!
It has long been said by sellers in the gaming industry that there’s no money in new releases and their reason being that the wholesale price is just too close to the actual retail price to see any return on investment. They will always advise you to stay clear of these new titles in favour of older less competitive games where your mark-up can be alot bigger. While this is great advise and a point that anyone starting out should take note of, what if you are still absolutely set on selling new releases, surely there must be a way you can make money from buying and selling them isn’t there?
In my day to day work running gameassassin.co.uk, I am constantly on ebay checking prices and have came across a very interesting trend and huge opportunity for anybody who wants to sell the latest releases.
While new releases continually sell on ebay at up to the expected retail price (£39.99 for example), I have noticed some sell for anything down to £12 (a price so low that no wholesaler in the world could provide you for even if you purchased in the thousands) But I haven’t just noticed this happen on the odd occasion either, I see it happening for pretty much every new release!
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:
Splinter Cell Conviction is probably the biggest new release on the Xbox 360 this month (April 2010), the current price on play.com and game.co.uk is £39.99 and £37.99 respectively.
So let’s take a little look at the completed listings on ebay....
View completed listings for Splinter Cell Conviction

As you can see, the lowest price it has recently sold for on ebay is just £20 if you had been quicker then you could have bought it and re-sold at up to £40.
That’s a £20 pound mark-up on selling just one item! Who said there’s no money in new releases?

Now as a seller you are probably thinking 2 things:
1. Why are some new releases selling for so low?
This can happen for a number of reasons which any savvy seller will know all about. Factors such as a seller having low feedback, poor item descriptions or only listing the auction for 1 day aswell as a variety of other reasons can mean that their items sell for alot less than expected.
2. What methods can I use to get my hands on these super cheap new releases?
It’s simple, all you need to do is check ebay listings for any new releases of your choice. To save time, what you are particularly looking for in these listings are:
- Auctions with little, poor or no description and images,
- Sellers with low feedback (not bad feedback unless you are thinking of taking a risk!)
- Auctions which only last 1 – 3 days
-auctions ending at unsociable hours like 3am.
Also, take note of this:
People list a game as ‘new’ but don’t state if the game is still sealed (referring to the transparent wrapping that brand new games come in), this can greatly affect the price and alot of buyers won’t bother to bid on the item as they can’t be bothered to get in contact with the seller and ask if it is sealed.
You should definitely try and contact the seller in these cases and find out if the item is sealed as these auctions are pretty much guaranteed to sell for less!
Sell Them Fast!
To fully reap the rewards (i.e. hard cash) of this concept you must re-sell your items as soon as possible, don’t sit on your stock as Game Prices can drop within just a few weeks so make sure you sell them fast in order to get the maximum return on investment or you will be sorry.
The Downside
Unfortunately this only works for new releases, as the general retail price of a game starts to drop below £30 the selling price on ebay evens out alot more which squashes your profits.
Once this happens you are better sourcing your stock from the gameassassin.co.uk listing and re-sell those on ebay.
